In online trade, Romania is still far behind most other European countries. In recent years, however, large growth figures can be seen in this area. In 2021 alone, the e-commerce sector grew by 26%. The fashion sector generates the largest sales, followed by electronics and media articles. Of the nearly 20 million inhabitants, around 70% regularly shop online – and the trend is rising.
The biggest player in online retail is emag.ro ($990 million in sales), followed by fashiondays.ro and altex.ro.
Payments in Romania are made in Leu (RON). The national language is Romanian and the second most important language group is Hungarian (with over one million speakers). Online websites should be written in Romanian, as only a small percentage of the population is fluent in English.
